We had a great time at market today and we’re happy to see so many folks out buying veggies, herbs and flowers for their gardens. It’s amazing what a bit of sunshine can do for one’s spirits!
We have a ton of seedlings for sale and are featuring our Heritage Seed Collective line of special Heirloom Seedlings. We’re focusing on a few of the annual and perennial varieties that are listed on the Slow Food Ark of Taste. We were awarded a grant from the Sprout Fund to help increase our local biodiversity and are excited to encourage the Pittsburgh community to start small and work towards becoming food secure! The first step is learning to grow food and save seeds – it’s as easy as growing a tomato in a five gallon bucket on your back porch. Imagine a time when, instead of buying seeds from a catalog, we talk to our neighbors and share seeds, food and community!
Come on down to the Farmers at the Firehouse on Saturdays (9am – 1pm), or stop by Garden Dreams Urban Farm and Nursery, the East End Food Coop, or Whole Foods and purchase a Heritage Seed Collective Seedling today. Save your seeds and send a few back to us in the fall. We’re starting a Pittsburgh Community Seed Bank and will re-distribute the seeds in the spring of 2012.
