While preparing to head out to market this morning, we had to scrape the frost off of the windshield of the truck! Earlier this week, we had to take an early afternoon siesta to get a break from the 90+ degree heat! This is some crazy weather!

This past couple days of showers and cool weather were a nice respite – before the rain came, we’ve been dutifully hooking up and turning on the irrigation systems around the farm (which we don’t usually do until late June) – but everything still seems like it’s been set back with these dry, hot temps.

Therefore, we’re going to push our start date back one week to June 12 (for Wednesdays pick ups) and June 15 (for Saturday pick up), lasting for 20 weeks. If you signed up for the 14 week Summer Share, you’ll start around July 24th (unless you signed up as a half share, which we’ll then need to assign you a start date).

Also – if you signed up as a half share – we’ll send out an email letting you know if you’ll start on the first pick up or the second pick up and then every other
week after that.

There will be another email with more details regarding the first CSA pick up. Please reply to this email with additional email addresses of folks you might be sharing a CSA share with that might not be included here (check with them first please!)

We’ll meet back up next month on June 29th – the last Saturday of every month – 4 – 6 pm.

Ready to kick off the CSA Season!

So…. is it spring yet or what? This weather is confusing and hard to keep up with. I remember last year – we had 80 degree days! I’m sure, like us, you’re getting cabin fever and are ready for warm sunny weather. We’re chomping at the bit to get out to the fields and grow some food!

Just sending out a friendly reminder – if you haven’t signed up for your CSA share yet – it’s time to do so! (if you already have signed up, please disregard this paragraph.) You can send in 1/2 (or all) of your total amount due now and the other 1/2 by August 1. Please fill out the shareholder agreement form (found on our homepage)- send it on back with your payment, letting me know what size share you would like and where you’ll be picking it up. Remember to take $20 off to the total price if you’re a returning member. If you recommend our CSA to a friend, and they join – make sure they mention your name. We’ll give you a $25 gift certificate to the farm!

Workshare Information
We have limited workshare options, if you’re interested. Workshare members help with the harvest or other farm chores on Tuesdays 9 am – 1:30 pm. Feel free to stick around and have lunch with the whole crew. You pay for your share up front and we reimburse you for the days you come out to work. If you miss a harvest day – you can still pick up your share, as you’ve already paid for it!

We’re also looking for someone who would like to trade a CSA share in exchange for delivering bread to the farm. We would need you to pick up our order from Allegro Hearth Bakery (in Squirrel Hill) on Wednesday mornings, by 9 am and bring it out to the farm no later than 10 am, for 20 weeks (we’ll have your share bagged and ready to go, no need to wait until 11 am, when the barn opens). Again, we ask that you pay up front for your share and we’ll reimburse you weekly for each delivery.

CSA Committee Potluck/Picnic
This Saturday is our first CSA committee picnic. Come on out around 4 and we hope to wrap up around 6pm or 7pm. We’ll fire up the wood oven and crank out pizzas. Dress warm if you plan to hang out by the oven, but we’ll host the event in the house – just so it’s not too cold! We’d like to discuss a number of topics and hear your opinions, suggestions and ideas. If you’d like to become a more active member in our CSA community and would like to help our farm grow, we’d love to have you! If you have skills or resources you’re willing to share/trade – let us know, we’d love to hear more! So long as there’s interest, we intend to have these committee potlucks throughout the growing season – the last Saturday of every month (so long as there isn’t another event going on here). Please RSVP for the potluck this Saturday (3.30.13).
